Deisha walked up and down as she waited backstage. This would be her most important piano performance yet. At ten years old, she was the youngest performer in the recital (音乐演奏会). She had practiced playing her song more than 30 times that week. When she closed her eyes at night, the music played over and over again in her head.
Now that the day had arrived, Deisha was not sure she was ready. She smoothed her hair and picked a piece of lint (绒毛) from the new dress that her mother had bought for her. She noticed that her hands were shaking. How could she play the notes of the song if her hands were shaking? She tried to concentrate on steadying (稳住) them, but they only shook more.
Deisha’s piano teacher, Ms Neal, walked up to speak to her. “I have something for you,” she said, putting a smooth black stone into Deisha’s hand. “It’s a special stone. There’s no other one like it in the world. You’ve practiced so much, you don’t need anything else.”
The stage lights reflected off the rock. “Thank you,” Deisha said.
When Deisha’s name was called, she rubbed the stone, stepped onto the stage, and played better than ever. After her performance, she noticed that Ms Neal had a whole bag of black stones. “Why did you say this one was so special?” she asked.

Two years ago I was very lonely and didn’t talk with anyone about my feelings. At the time I didn’t have many friends. I wanted someone to share my experiences and secrets with. I wanted someone to understand me. I started to imagine this friend. Often I imagined our conversations and what we would do, but I didn’t give my imagination a face.
Some weeks later we started a new project in school and I was working with one of my schoolmates. We had never worked together before but we got along well. After the project we started to spend some time together in school. One day we decided to take a walk. Ever since that walk we’ve been best friends. We listened and really understood each other.
I had wished for a best friend, but the universe gave me so much more. I have met one of my soul mates (挚友). We can sense each other, and it just takes one look and we know what the other is thinking. I didn’t think our friendship could grow much stronger. But now we have known for two years and our friendship is growing all the time.
It hasn’t only been easy. We have gone through both easy and hard times. But I’m grateful for the hard times, because they have forced me to grow and taught me a lot. My best friend has changed me. She has made me believe in myself. And I am now focusing on achieving one of my biggest dreams. Without her I wouldn’t even have realized what my biggest dream is.
I know there are soul mates out in the world for you. I am so grateful to have met one of mine. Believe in them, and your paths will cross!
25.What did the author do before meeting her soul mate?
  A. She chose to stay alone.
B. She spent time with other friends.
  C. She told others about her feelings
D. She pictured a friend in her mind.
26..Why is the author thankful for the hard times?
  A. She got to know her best friend.
B. She has learnt a lot from them.
  C. They have changed her.
D. They have made her dream come true.
27.What do we know about the author and her soul mate?
  A. Their friendship is still developing.
B. She is the author’s only soul mate.
  C. They are trying hard to realize their dreams.
D. She has little confidence in their friendship.
                                         C
Have you ever had trouble trying to choose a gift? Perhaps you need a birthday present for someone who is hard to please. How about clothing? You might be worried about choosing the wrong size, color, or style. Books or DVDs? You may not know enough about the person’s likes, dislikes, and interests. And giving money may not seem right. Well, how about a gift card?
A gift card is a card that is issued (发行) by a certain store. It’s worth a certain amount money. It looks like a credit card (信用卡), but it actually works like cash. A gift-card holder can spend the amount of money noted on the card in the store that issued it. These cards are big money makers. One reason is that when gift-card holders go to the store, they often see other things to buy, and they end up spending more money than the gift card is worth. Unused cards are another big source of revenue (收益).
Gift cards are becoming extremely popular in many countries around the world. Why? People love the convenience—cards are easy to buy and easy to use, either in the store or online. The receiver can select his or her own gift, and the giver doesn’t have to worry about finding just the right thing.
Receiving a gift card, however, is not the same as receiving a gift. An actually gift is a better reminder of the person who gave it. It helps us appreciate the thought and effort that went into the choice. The message of a real gift is more likely to be, “I spent some time trying to find the right gift for you because I care about you.”
Often a gift card doesn’t pass on the same message as an actual gift. It may seem to say, “I was in a hurry. I didn’t have time to think about what you really like.” In today’s busy world, gift cards are certainly convenient. However, they can make us forget the real purpose of giving gifts, which is to build a closer bond (联系) between the gift-giver and the gift-receiver.
28.The first paragraph is used to ____________.
  A. introduce the main topic B. show the author’s attitude
  C. describe how to choose a gift D. explain how to use a gift card
29.What do we know about gift cards?
  A. They are the same as credit cards.
B. They help stores earn much money.
  C. They bring more customers to stores.
D. They are worth more money than they cost.
30.What is the advantage of giving an actual gift?
  A. It is appreciated by the receivers.
B. It reminds people of their interests.
  C. It shows the givers’ thought and effort.
D. It passes on more messages about the receivers.
31.The last paragraph mainly talks about ____________.
  A. the relationship between the gift-giver and gift-receiver
  B. the bond between gift cards and actual gifts.
  C. the real purpose of giving gifts
  D. the disadvantage of gift cards.
                                   D
In many countries, schools have long summer holidays, with shorter holidays in between. However, a new report suggests shortening school holidays to stop children forgetting what they have learnt during the long summer break. Instead of three school terms, it says, there should be five eight-week terms. And there should be just four weeks off in the summer, with a two-week bread between the other terms.
Sonia Montero has two children at primary school and works full-time. She supports the idea. “The kids,” she says, “have much longer holidays than me and I can’t afford to take several weeks off work, so I need someone to take care of them. But nobody wants the work in the summer months—they all have holidays of their own.”
Not surprisingly, some young people disagree. Student Jason Panos says, “It’s a stupid idea. I would hate staying at school in the summer. It’s unfair, too. The people who suggest this had long school holidays when they were young, but now they want to stop us enjoying the summer. The kids in Spain and America have much longer holidays than here, but they don’t forget everything they’ve learnt in a few months.”
Nadia Salib agrees. “Sure,” she says, “the first week at school after the summer is never easy, but you soon get back into it. The real problem round here is that kids get bored after so many weeks out of school, and then some of them start causing trouble. But the answer is to give them something to do, not make everyone stay in school longer.”
32.Why is Sonia in support of shorter school holidays?
  A. She doesn’t get any summer holidays in her jobs.
  B. She is worried that her children will forget what they’ve learnt.
  C. She can’t afford to pay someone to look after her children.
  D. She can’t get anyone to look after her children in summer.
33.What does Jason say about long summer holidays?
  A. They can help children forget about school.
B. They have no influence on children’s education.
C. It doesn’t make any sense.
D. Schools in other countries don’t have them.
34.What does Nadia say about young people after summer holidays?
  A. They would like to spend more time at school.
  B. It takes long for them to fit into the school life.
C. They need something to do to enrich their lives.
D. Parents should stop them causing trouble.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
  A. Not everyone agrees to change school holiday.
  B. Students are angry that school holidays have been changed.
  C. It has been decided that summer holidays should be shortened.
  D. Teenagers are worried that they will be busy during summer holidays.

Be a Green Child
What does it mean to be green? “Green” is more than just a color. __36__Why green? Plants are green, and without them the Earth wouldn’t be such a lovely home for us human beings. What can we do? Here’s a four-step guide to being green.
   Reduce It!
__37__ For instance, a shorter shower means you used less water and less fuel since your house uses fuel to run the water heater that warmed up the water.
   Reuse It!
Sometimes people call ours a “throwaway society”. That means that we’re a little too willing to throw away old stuff (东西) and buy new stuff. __38__ For instance, if your baby brother becomes older and loses interest in his plastic basketball hoop (篮圈), why not give it to another family who has a little kid?
   Recycle It!
Recycling has never been easier. Many communities will pick it up right in front of your house and some towns even require it. Recycled goods go to a recycling center, where they can be turned into new cans, bottles, and paper.
   Enjoy It!
It’s true that rubbish and pollution are problems, but the Earth remains a huge and beautiful place that’s ready for you to explore. __39__ Go for a hike, visit local nature centers and gardens, and climb up mountains.
But before you travel the globe, take a look at your own backyard. Is there a spot where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden?__40__
   A. If so, get out there and get your hands dirty.
   B. Turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth.
   C. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment.
   D. When you use less of something, you do a good thing for the Earth.
   E. You can start locally by visiting the naturally beautiful spots in your city.
   F. Many times, even if you no longer need something, someone else just might.
   G. You can watch with pride as your tree takes root and your garden plants grow.

W: So what do you do on Halloween? (10)We don't have that holiday in Russia.
M: Well, it's a day when kids dress up in masks and costumes. They knock on people's doors and ask for candy by saying “Trick or treat?”
 W: Hmm. Sounds interesting.
M: But it's not just for kids. Lots of people have costume parties. (12)Hey, my friend Peter is having a party. Would you like to go?
 W: (12)Sure. I'd love to.
Text 9
 W: (13)Andrew, you're reading a Chinese kung fu novel, aren't you?
M: (13) Yeah. I like Chinese kung fu a lot, and I want to learn more about it. I've read two.
 W: Namely?
M: Tian Long Ba Bu and Hidden Dragon.
W: Wow. You've made great progress in Chinese.
M: Thanks. By the way, is there a popular part of Tian Long Ba Bu by Jin Yong in high school textbooks?
W: Yes. But there are different opinions about it.
M: Why? Isn't Tian Long Ba Bu a popular kung fu novel for all ages?
W: Yeah. (14)But some people think kung fu novels are bad for teenagers.
M: But the new textbooks are only designed to make students read more after school.
W: That's right. (15)And some people see kung fu novels as modern Chinese literature.
 M: Really?
W: (16)Anyway, the students should like it.
 M: I think so, too.
Text 10
M: Hello, Carol. What seems to be the trouble?
W: (20)So kind of you to come to see me. I don't know what's wrong. (17)Three days ago, while I was planting roses in the garden, it rained and I got completely wet, and I've had a cough since that night. Now I ache all over.
M: Well, let me take a look at you. Are you still coughing very much?
W: Yes, and my stomach has been upset. In addition, I always feel sick.
 M: Hmm. You're running a high fever, I'm afraid.
W: Oh, no wonder I've got a hot face.
M: (18)Well, Carol, I think you've got the flu. These days there has been a lot of flu going around. (19)I want you to stay in bed for at least two days, drink plenty of water, and take the medicine three times a day. (20)I'll look in on you tomorrow morning.
W: Very good. Thank you so much.
